Another Christchurch Rest Home is in the gun for failures within their system. In this case a 93-year-old man died after receiving substandard care at a Christchurch rest home, the Health and Disability Commissioner has ruled.
Instead of receiving the hospital-level care he required, the man was given a bed in another ward where his ill health was underestimated.
The man, who had a history of cardiac and kidney problems, arrived at Karadean Court Lifecare from a public hospital in 2009.
His family was ensured he would receive "excellent care" despite not being in the hospital ward, but his condition rapidly deteriorated. Seven days later he was back in hospital, where he died of suspected septic shock.
The facility's owners were also found to have breached the man's rights to quality care by not sufficiently supporting and providing oversight to senior staff.
The nurses involved accepted they should have acted differently, but complained to the commissioner of feeling overwhelmed and under-supported in their roles. One nurse said staff had a "learn as you go" approach, while another described her job as "hell".
This is not the first time a Christchurch Rest Home has been found "wanting". Supercare4u.com believes that there is no place for inferior care to the aged.
